The WTO and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand have officially completed a project to help the hotels along the Andaman coast in Thailand significantly reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases and energy costs by using energy-saving technologies.
Participating hotels have managed to successfully reduce their carbon footprint and cut costs by implementing energy efficient technologies and renewable energy (EE / ER), under the Energy Efficiency Program in Kho Kho Khao Lak and ( PEEK), developed jointly by UNWTO and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of Thailand.
Initial estimates indicate that the measures taken following the implementation of the project will generate savings of about 385,000 kWh annual energy consumption and allow a reduction in CO2 emissions of 192 tonnes a year. This reduction in gas emissions Greenhouse has been estimated at 10-25% annually, depending on the technology used and the characteristics of each hotel.
Over the past two years was measured energy consumption of the participating hotels through energy audits in the framework of which also made recommendations for energy savings in each case. Following these recommendations, the hotels have installed technologies EE / ER, such as heat pumps, hybrid power systems with solar panels and efficient pool pumps, in order to significantly reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases. These technologies who settled in low season, were supplied by local producers, which has contributed to regional added value.
Under the project PEEK are also given training and capacity building in terms of technologies EE / ER to hotels and local communities, not only in Khao Kho Khao Lak and but also in all Andaman coast. Project is expected to serve as a model for similar actions in other regions of Thailand. It has also published a handbook on energy efficiency for Thai hotels.
