In fact, in 2009 in a crisis is a bet in this regard and the good results of 2010 can be attributed largely to the measure.

SWISS reported strong operating profit of 368 million Swiss Francs (CHF)

After a year demanding and challenging, Swiss International Air Lines (Group) has recorded an operating profit of 368 million Swiss Francs (CHF) in 2010. This result, compared to 146 million Swiss Francs (CHF) operating profit achieved in 2009, has been achieved despite the revenue fell by 30 million Swiss Francs (CHF) due to the crisis caused by the volcanic ash cloud, as well as the strong Swiss franc and rising fuel prices. Total income from operating activities amounted to 4.774 million Swiss francs, representing a 9% improvement over 2009. SWISS generated an operating profit of 135 million Swiss francs during the last quarter of 2010. The cargo business of Swiss World Cargo has made a considerable contribution to the overall results, while maintaining consistent results throughout the period of twelve months.

SWISS recorded a seat occupancy rate of 82.3%, a new record for the company and Swiss aviation (the seat occupancy rate of 2009 reached 80.1%). More than 14 million passengers in 2010 also represent the largest volume of passengers that the company has moved from its founding in 2002.

'2010 was a good year for SWISS, "says SWISS CEO, Harry Hohmeister. "After a rough start this year with the setback of the volcanic ash cloud, we were able to report strong results in the second half of the year. We also observed evidence that our efforts, based on the product and customer service are being successful. "

Despite the encouraging results, Hohmeister is enthusiastic to highlight the importance of maintaining business flexibility and cost discipline. 'We must not waver in our management of costs,' says, 'we must adjust our actions and activities to market volatility likely to increase - partly through external factors like oil price and exchange rate trends and, moreover, by the development of the market as customer reserves are increasingly difficult to predict. Recent events in the Maghreb region and in Japan reflects the importance of flexibility. "

SWISS has expanded its capacity by 4.4% in 2010 to 3.4% in Europe and 4.9% on intercontinental routes. The long distance sector saw a recovery in demand compared to levels seen at the beginning of the financial crisis. The Zurich-San Francisco route, operated since last June, showed a favorable business volume from the first month. "We are delighted to have met here a customer need," says Hohmeister. "The occupancy rate of the route is well above our expectations."

In the European network however, has seen a tangible increase in competition with other operators, yields have yet to recover from the previous levels observed during the 2009 crisis. 'In view of this, our European business remains a focus of the next steps', confirms Hohmeister. SWISS CEO is cautiously optimistic for 2011. 'The year had a very disappointing start' recognizing 'and it is increasingly difficult to make reliable predictions, given the growth of fluctuations seen in our business. We intend to emulate last year's results. "

'Given the high volatility market, maintain our cost structure is one of our primary tasks, "added CFO, Marcel Klaus. 'Flexibility, variability and speed of execution are the keys to a sustainable corporate development. "

environmental concerns
SWISS in 2010 has reduced its consumption of fuel per 100 passenger kilometers by 3.9%, compared to consumption levels of the previous year. The airline's own use has been reduced from 4.52 liters per 100 passenger kilometers in 2002 to 3.73 liters. The airline is strongly committed to improving eco-efficiency, investing in technologies to reduce emissions, conducting operational decisions and ensuring the highest possible load capacity on its flights.

Punctuality affected by snow and the cloud of volcanic ash:
2010 operations were severely affected by a large number of external factors, especially by the eruption of Iceland in April. The ash cloud caused by this resulted in the cancellation of 1,885 flights, affecting 202,184 passengers, with a loss of income for SWISS 60 million Swiss Francs (CHF) and como30 million Swiss Francs in the overall results. SWISS also suffered a decline in their annual on-time performance: 79.9% of all flights took off within 15 minutes allowed in departure times, compared with 84.4% in 2009. This is due in part to the heavy snowfall of January, February and December, and the increase in strikes in Europe and a general increase in traffic volume, which was a big pressure for airport capacity and air traffic. The volcanic ash cloud was also a negative impact on punctuality, as flights in May had to be diverted. Punctuality in the last quarter stood at 77.2% compared with 81% obtained during the same period last year.
